Tad and Pam Seder & Andrews
The annual Safaricom Marathon takes place on June 30th. The race is run entirely on the dirt roads of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya.
Lewa is a remarkable place, run by remarkable people. Not only is Lewa's 62,000 acres providing critical habitat to a range of species, from giraffes, cheetas and lions (and 10 percent of Kenya's black and white rhino populations), but serves as a conservation model that has led to better land management on more than a million acres of Kenya's Northern Rangelands.
Perhaps more importantly, conservation benefiting local people in the area by providing jobs, improving forage for livestock and wildlife, maintaining water supplies and improving security.
There's a great story about a woman in a local village telling Nature Conservancy staff that an important change that conservation has made in her life is that she can now sleep with her shoes off. Previously, she slept in her shoes because she so often had to race outside at night to protect her livestock and family from poachers and rustlers.
Funds raised through this race, among many other important community development and conservation programs, helps pay for the poacher patrols that are bringing enhanced security to local villages.
