EVENT: 2011 ING New York City Marathon - $1 Mil a Mile

THE STORY:

Music class was always one of my favorite subjects in school, but what I only learned recently was that it helped to make me and my classmates more creative, better problem solvers, and a stronger communicators. However, many New York City children don't have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of music these days, as schools are aggressively cutting programs in order to meet tighter budgets. This is why I will be running the 2011 ING NYC Marathon on November 6th in order to raise money for Education Through Music (ETM).

ETM forms long-term partnerships with New York City schools that serve disadvantaged children and lack school-wide music programs. These partnerships provide weekly, skills- and standards-based music instruction to every child in each school, and provide supporting services such as training, professional development, leadership guidance, assessment and capacity building to music teachers, classroom teachers, principals and parents.

Underlying all of ETM's programs and services is the philosophy that learning in music is as fundamental to the growth of children as learning in math, science, and literacy. The goal for education, especially at the elementary levels, is to provide a balance of experiences and opportunities that enables children to acquire as many intellectual, emotional, and social skills as possible, as deeply and thoroughly as possible.
