Dear Family and Friends,
On Sunday, March 18, 2012, I will be running the NYC Half Marathon in honor of my son Ryan Colby Summers. I will be a member of the Jackson Gabriel Silver Foundation team. This family has established a non-profit organization determined to find a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa, the devastating disease that affects Ryan, as well as the Silver's son, Jackson. There is very promising research underway, and we are hopeful for a cure. I am honored to be apart of this team and to be a PART of raising funds for a cure.
Ryan suffers from Junctional EB. He has wounds over a quarter of his body. He is wrapped in wound dressings to help protect him and help him to heal. He often suffers corneal abrasions which cause him debilitating pain, and has been on life support for blistering in his airway. While he could walk as an infant, he is no longer able to do so. He spends his days being transferred by his caregivers. He often wakes multiple times throughout the middle of the night -he suffers terribly from itching and difficulty breathing . He endures a grueling one to two hour bath and bandage change (in addition to diaper/wound changes) everyday in order to prevent infection. He is on 15 different medications. Definitely not things that are typical in the life of a 4 year old boy.
Ryan is a precocious little boy who has a great love for music, trains, and language. He is a fighter, and speaks often of his battle against EB. An amazing boy, wise well beyond his years. I am in awe of him, and he makes me so proud.
