THE STORY:
Bob Bessin wrote -
Team Priory for Daraja are Woodside Priory High School students, faculty and families dedicated to empowering women of promise in Kenya through the Daraja Academy. The Daraja Academy of Kenya was started four years ago by the grassroots efforts of teachers and others in the US and Kenya to get women of promise into a secondary school that they could not otherwise afford. The leverage of educating a woman in this environment is significant. Women influence their children and improve conditions of life greatly: The Nike Foundation calls it the "Girl Effect".
I am the leader of this team, one of the initiators of Daraja and past President of the Board of the Carr Educational Foundation, which supports Daraja. I have been to Daraja twice, once to help set up the school, and again last summer to visit with over 76 students enrolled at that time. My picture shows me meeting with the students who follow Islam in their lives. Although Daraja is a nonsecterian school, it encourages students of all religions, tribes and geographies to express themselves in a positive and individual way as part of the global community..
