HERE'S THE STORY:
Jason has been training vigorously throughout the winter to prepare for the 2012 Boston Marathon; one segment of his training included participating in a Ironman in Puerto Rico! Unfortunately, he will not be able to compete in the race due to health-related issues. He will however be providing support and encouragement at the wheelchair division start in Hopkinton on race day.
As disappointed as Jason may be about missing this year's Boston Marathon, he can take pride in the effectiveness of his mentoring skills. Jason has been coaching Tilly Hatcher to help her get ready to participate in her first Marathon and Tilly Hatcher is ready, willing, and able to represent Spaulding on Marathon Monday!
Here is how Tilly describes how she ended up at the starting line.....
"When I moved to Cambridge nearly two years ago I never thought I'd be running the marathon now. The seeds got planted last summer when I had a blast participating in a 5k in my everyday chair. Then I started walking to work from Cambridge to Watertown, which was about 5k. Getting in that habit made everywhere in the city seem within walking distance and I started looking for reasons to go farther--8 miles, 10, 13 on a really good day.
Getting involved with Spaulding's adaptive sporting program was a real turning point. I met Cheri Blauwet, Eric Kondo, and Jason Fowler, who have been wonderful mentors--inspiring me to challenge myself and enjoy every step of it. I owe a big thanks to Mary Patstone, director of the adaptive sports program, Ann Marie Dwyer and countless others who have made it possible for me to be ready for the race. I have a feeling it will be an unforgettable experience!"
