For 2012, the AJC Peachtree Road Race is reaching out to the entire community in an effort to raise awareness and money for charities. This year we're making it easier than ever to let all of our participants, volunteers and supporters get involved.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

For more than 100 years in north and middle Georgia, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's thousands of volunteers have met people in need where they are, in their homes, at local restaurants, at their local churches, to conduct individual needs assessments in order to customize poverty relief services which address immediate needs and teach ways to improve their capacity to become self-sufficient.

SVdP Program and Services

The Society’s primary work is within a 35 county service-area where local volunteers assist clients with their emergency needs.  Services include: 

• Emergency Assistance– After meeting with clients, SVdP distributes funding for housing (rent/mortgage) and utility assistance paid directly to identified-vendors.  More than 189,000 people were served in 2010 with $8.8 million dispersed in assistance. 
   
• Food Distribution/Clothing/household needs- Local SVdP Conferences assist with food;  35 of the 70 conferences have small food pantries.  Those without pantries often assist with food gift cards.  St. Vincent de Paul also supports four Family Support Centers which contain client-choice food pantries for food distribution.  Clients can also obtain vouchers for clothing and household goods redeemable at SVdP Thrift Stores or other partner clothing operations.
   
• Other services:  government and community Benefits Screening, Tax Preparation (VITA), medical and prescription assistance, health screenings and educational programs, (ESL, GED, financial literacy, and life and job search skills) which help people break the cycles of dependence and create opportunities to achieve self-sufficiency and stability.
