Mission: To empower youth and adults as agents of positive individual, institutional, and social change.
Vision: We envision a world in which youth, working with adults in mutually respectful and supportive relationships, can use their voices creatively to inspire, lead, and empower their communities to achieve justice and peace.
Since 1992, Teen Empowerment has engaged over 30,000 urban youth in building communities of cooperation and respect in Boston and Somerville, MA, and in Rochester, NY. Teen Empowerment believes that the voices and energies of youth are essential to changing the conversation among inner-city youth, intervening in destructive behaviors, and establishing peaceful communities. Each year, Teen Empowerment hires over 90 teens to work at one of our five youth-organizing sites. There, TE’s Youth Organizers receive the support, training, and resources they need to think deeply about difficult social problems and take effective action to address these problems. TE youth use their training to implement over 150 community-change initiatives that involve more than 5,000 youth, residents, civic leaders, and police. These initiatives function to build relationships based on cooperation and respect between diverse community members and to help create a broad-based commitment to work for positive community change.
