Amber Rinehard's Fundraiser:
Text 100 ROC's Day of Service
Amber
EVENT DATE: Oct 25, 2011
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Nov 01, 2011
HERE'S THE STORY:
Text 100 Rochester is excited to work with Dimitri House for its first official "Day of Service" on October 25! Until then, we are hoping to raise as much as we can for this great local cause, and we thank you for considering supporting us in our mission.
On the Day of Service, Rochester Texties will join the folks at Dimitri House for a morning of volunteer work. We will be repainting their community kitchen and will help to set up beds for the winter shelter which opens just a few days later on November 1.
About Dimitri House
Dimitri House began in 1980 as an organization to help the hungry and homeless of Rochester, NY. Its mission is to advocate and network with other agencies to ensure an adequate response for the poor and to empower individuals to take control of their lives. Dimitri House provides services such as a food cupboard, drop-in program, men's emergency winter shelter, and holiday programs to support the less fortunate in Rochester. More details on what each service includes can be found here.
Dimitri House is named after Dimitri Mamczur, a homeless man, who lived in two taped-together cardboard boxes under an expressway bridge. He was known for his charitable spirit, despite his tough situation - he would often help the merchants on Park and East Avenues, but decline money when it was offered to him, was willing give anything to help out his fellow homeless friends, and was often known for collecting bottles an cans to be able to buy a loaf of bread to feed the birds.
Tragically, Mamczur passed away after being hit by a car on East Avenue. Inspired by Dimitri's story and good nature, individuals from the local Corpus Christi Church made a commitment to do more to support the homeless and poor in the Rochester community, and started up Dimitri House in Mamczur's honor as a place to serve delicious meals and bring warm hospitality and loving acceptance to the people who need it most. More than 30 years later, Dimitri House is independently operated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and continues to help the poor and homeless throughout our community.
