OUR MISSION: To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.
The First Tee has come a long way since its establishment by the World Golf Foundation in 1997. What started as an initiative to create affordable access for those not previously exposed to the game has become a leading youth development organization. Through its mission of teaching life skills and character education through the game of golf, The First Tee is having a positive impact on participants, their families, and their communities.
Young people who become members of The First Tee enjoy a variety of opportunities to learn life skills that can help them grow as individuals and prepare for the future. As they progress through the various skill levels, participants cultivate interpersonal and self-management skills, learn to set goals and experience the dynamics of group and community interaction. They also develop a sense of social responsibility that can positively impact them both on the golf course and in their everyday lives. Many young people learn the lifelong benefits of volunteering, mentoring and tutoring through their association with The First Tee.
The First Tee of San Antonio is one of 200 Chapters worldwide, and in fact one of the very first chartered chapters in the United States. There have been close to 4,000 children enrolled in the San Antonio program since inception and we currently reach approximately 850 per year. Life skills and golf instructions are provided by trained staff, volunteers, mentors, parents, as well as paid teaching professionals.
Since access to The First Tee program and the practice facility is provided to participants at no cost to them or their family ( an estimated $525 fee per child per year), we rely completely on support and donations from foundations, corporations and individuals.
