Germaine Habell's Fundraiser:
To Mother, With Love

HOURS PLEDGED: 400
HERE'S THE STORY:
My mom's side of the family is Nigerian, and when she moved back to Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria in 2009, I knew the time had come to see where we come from. I volunteered at Mayflower School there, which educates children from kindergarten through high school. Although many of the students I tutored were well on their way to becoming successful graduates, I was astonished to discover how many of their hardworking parents were themselves illiterate. Because women's literacy is one of the best markers of a nation's wellbeing, it is incredibly important that all of Mayflower School's mothers learn to read. I cannot imagine going through my school years without my mother's help at home, and I'm sure most of you cannot fathom it either. Help the women of Ikenne by donating to To Mother, With Love; so that they may have their own reading center and teachers to help them gain access to education.
Because there are a variety of reading levels among the women of Ikenne, To Mother, With Love aims to obtain materials for various skill levels. Some women have never read a word in their lives, while others may have up to a an eighth grade education. Regardless of what they are able to currently read, the ultimate goal would be for every woman in Ikenne to eventually be able to pick up any book and read it cover-to-cover. Literacy brings hope to the disempowered, and no one deserves more support than those who devote their lives to supporting others. Nigeria's education system is in tatters at the moment, and there are almost no resources available to those who were not granted education from an early age.
