HERE'S THE STORY:
I'm not getting any younger working to get this skatepark built. To prove it, I'm having a birthday on September 7!
As with most years, I daydream about all the awesome gadgets I could ask for for my birthday. You know, the Easy Cracker ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMlpSgEWhvg ), The Hawaii Chair ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9_amg-Aos4 ), and other much-needed items in my life. I've decided to leave those important purchases for later, maybe after I win the lotto.
What I'm really looking forward to is the day that's coming soon where kids and adults can get off their duffs and skate at the local skatepark. Ann Arbor doesn't have one, and we're working to build the best one in the mid-west, if not the country.
Too many kids are not getting the exercise they need. Sitting inside on computers and playing video games is great, but too many young people spend MOST of their time doing that. The existence of a free, public skatepark will offer opportunities for kids of all ages to participate in an exciting, healthy, social, recreational activity. This is especially important for those people (like me) who grew up uncomfortable with super-competitive team sports.
When I was younger, I met my best friends, and many of the surrounding friends, through skateboarding or the skateboarding culture. Those friends are still part of my life today. With a public skatepark in the County, kids who aren't social in the traditional sense can find a place to pursue the "sport" that they love, and make lifelong friends while doing it.
My goal with this latest CR project is to raise $430. All I need is 43 people to give $10 each to meet my goal (one person for each year of my life). If you want to give more, that'd be great! And remember, ALL MONEY RAISED UP TO $400,000 WILL BE MATCHED BY THE WASHTENAW COUNTY PARKS DEPARTMENT! So, we'll actually be raising $860 for the skatepark! I'll do another one of these just before my 86th birthday, too.
