I'm a social justice advocate for humans, animals and the environment.
I was adopted from Calcutta (Kolkata), India when I was six weeks old. I grew up in Apple Valley, MN with an amazing family, which includes my mom, dad and older brother, who is also adopted from Calcutta. My love for the environment and animals flourished at a young age. Along with my love for hockey, which I still play today :) Growing up I was fortunate to attend an optional high school during my jr. and sr years called the School of Environmental Studies, which opened my eyes to social and environmental activism. This carried over to my college majors: Spanish and Ethnic Studies specializing in International Community and Human Services and Latin American Studies Minor. After the termination of my BA/BS degrees I decided to further my education and received an MS in Ethnic and Multicultural Studies focusing on identity formation. Once that chapter of my life was completed, I had the opportunity to full fill my dream of returning to Calcutta and volunteering in the place that had given me life. I found a little non-profit on the internet- Children Resolution and Women Learning (CRAWL), signed up to volunteer, bought my plane ticket and left for three and half months. Two months was spent volunteering at CRAWL and the other month and half was backpacking all over India. My two initial weeks there were extremely hard. Adjusting to sight of everyday poverty and the thought that I could have grown up there was difficult to come to terms with. During my free time I researched and found the orphanage I was adopted from. It had closed about 10-15 years earlier. However, I was able to see the outside of the building. When they decided to close the orphanage no one wanted anything to do with it anymore so they burned all the papers and records. It was sad times for me, as I had always hoped to find some piece of my heritage, but it wasn't in the cards. From there I came to terms with the outcome and moved forward enjoying every minute volunteering. After I was done, I traveled to the Himalayas, beach, Ganges River, Taj Mahal and Desert.
Now my position as an Cultural Liaison in the public schools system provides me the opportunity to serve and assist the underrepresented students and families in the community. I'm very lucky and it's extremely rewarding
WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:
Because anyone that travels with 3 stuffed animals (Hoops, Yo-yo & Piddles) must be pretty cool ;)
