THE STORY:
Okay, so I'm at it again. This time to benefit an organization focused on the needs of young adults with cancer and to mark my second anniversary of being cancer free. I was diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma during my 3rd year of medical school. Having broken bad news to many patients, I was ill prepared to tell my wife and two young children. Luckily, my mentor had started a program to meet the challenging needs of parents with cancer and throughout my treatment I had the support of so many excellent and caring physicians.
However, many young adult cancer patients are not so fortunate. I've seen first hand how they struggle not just with the ravages of treatment but the equally devastating psychological toll cancer takes not only on the patient but his/her family as well. Medical science has made impressive strides in reducing mortality, but little focus is paid to the survivors, especially the young ones who from all outward appearances may look physically healthy, but struggle, often alone and in silence.
Enough preaching, here's the story. So I haven't actually ran since the mid 90's. But that hasn't stopped me before. I finished the 100 mile Smilow Cancer Hospital Bike Race (took almost 12 hours and came in last place, but I did it). This time my goal is a little more realistic - 1/2 marathon. Still I'll probably end up going for the whole thing. Wish me luck.
