The Berryessa Snow Mountain region is nearly 500,000 acres of public lands located less than 100 miles from the San Francisco and Sacramento metropolitan areas. It stretches from the UC Cold Canyon Natural Reserve 100 miles north to Snow Mountain Wilderness. The region contains rare and endemic species on islands of serpentine rock and soils; river habitat; and blue oak woodlands. Tule elk, bear, mountain lion and Pacific fisher roam the canyons and migratory corridors; bald eagles and osprey soar; while river otter frolic in the rivers. Recreational opportunities include hiking, kayaking, hunting, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and bird watching. A broad spectrum of stakeholders - from business owners to boaters, elected officials to equestrian enthusiasts - strongly support the effort to permanently preserve this special region as a congressionally designated National Conservation Area. An NCA designation will help protect the plants and animals, better manage the impacts of recreation, and provide economic opportunities for surrounding "gateway" communities. A National Conservation Area will make this region part of the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System. Tuleyome is also working as Friends of Cedar Rough and Cache Creek Wilderness to steward these core areas.
