TULEYOME's Fundraiser:
Tuleyome's Community Garden
TULEYOME
HERE'S THE STORY:
Tuleyome is working to provide gardening opportunities for low-income families and individuals. Low-income housing generally does not provide gardening space. Through the community garden program children from low-income families will have access to nutritionally rich vegetables and fruit that may otherwise not be available to them because of rising food costs. We want to involve children and adults of all ages in the cultivation and harvesting of their own food sources. The community garden will provide a common activity for bringing community members together regardless of age, ethnicity, or income. It will be open to youth, adults, and seniors alike. We will provide hands-on nutrition and gardening education to Head Start participants and their families. A series of five classes will teach children and families the importance of gardening in a healthy diet and help children become more confident in the outdoors. We will also provide hands-on education for youth in the field of agriculture/gardening. The involvement of youth in the community garden will be encouraged by the Woodland Youth Coalition, a member of the steering committee.
