Mission and History
In 1999, Jacob Lief and Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula founded Ubuntu Education Fund with the goal of transforming the lives of the children of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Ignoring the traditional development models, they redefined the theory of “going to scale:” rather than expanding geographically, Ubuntu drew a seven-kilometer line through a community of 400,000 people. Ubuntu created an integrated system of medical, health, educational, and social services that would ensure that a child who was either orphaned or vulnerable could, after several years, succeed in the worlds of higher education and employment.
Today, Ubuntu provides over 2,000 orphaned and vulnerable children and their families with lifesaving HIV support services and essential educational resources. The organization was started in a broom closet with a raffle on a university campus and today has over 70 full-time staff in South Africa and fundraising offices in London and New York. The Ubuntu Model has become a blueprint for organizations around the world that strive for culturally appropriate, community-based development. Ubuntu’s child-centered approach highlights the difference between merely touching a child’s life versus fundamentally changing it.
The Ubuntu Model
Ubuntu Education Fund’s mission is to provide vulnerable children access to higher education and the world of work. However, in areas of great need like South Africa, children may be unable to attend school for a variety of reasons—a sick parent, younger siblings who need care, or an inability to pay for school fees or a uniform. Therefore, Ubuntu must provide comprehensive services to ensure academic success. The Ubuntu Model ensures that every child has the full range of support he or she needs to become a successful, happy, and stable adult. Our holistic services allow counselors to develop unique, individualized plans for each unique, individual child.
The Ubuntu Model includes services such as:
University scholarships and financial aid
Individual and family counseling
Academic and extracurricular tutoring
Support groups
Educational kits for students
Backyard gardens
Holiday camps for vulnerable children
HIV management and treatment
Home assessments for all clients
Nutritional assessments and counseling
Prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission
