HERE'S THE STORY:
We think video can bring about positive social change. Particularly if it is used by grassroots advocacy organizations with local knowledge about what needs to be done, and who can do it.
In January, we traveled to Sri Lanka on a shoe-string budget to conduct a two week intensive training for grassroots organizations that wanted to use video as a tool to support their work. Our Sri Lanka based staff, Nadee and Niruba, then worked with participants to help them complete and distribute videos that bring moving testimony, video documentation, and a “human” context to decision makers and other target audiences. Some groups will screen their videos in small villages. Others to local politicians. (By November participants will have produced nine advocacy films- Please see the video on the left of this page.)
In April, we collaborated with the Legal Action Center, a nonprofit law firm and policy organization in New York, to produce "Your Rights, Your Future", a DVD that gives people leaving prison the skills and knowledge necessary to find jobs and prepares them for the challenges they may face in the reentry process.
Current projects focus on raising the number of women in local government, claiming rights in post- conflict environments, raising awareness about child marriage, promoting micro-financing, reducing gender based violence, and supporting sustainable agricultural and fishing practices.
The demand for access to video equipment and training is tremendous, and we are looking to expand our work and double the number of productions completed in 2011.
