BENEFITING: Lake Tanganyika Floating Health Clinic
THE STORY:
Thousands of young women in sub-Saharan Africa are suffering from fistulas, a devastating obstetric and violence-related injury, tragically resulting in chronic incontinence. Not only do these women and girls often lose their infants during obstructed labors, they end up complete outcasts by their communities for the rest of their lives.
Routine surgery can cure this problem, but access has been virtually non-existent to the remote populations of the Lake Tanganyika Basin until now.
This May, the LTFHC will spearhead a fistula repair outreach, treating Tanzanian and Congolese women and girls along the lakeshore. Part of our efforts will include a much-needed hospital facility upgrade, providing continued, vital health care to these isolated populations after our outreach has ended.
Where the Money Goes:
-$20: the cost to perform fistula repair surgery on one woman.
-$65: how much is needed to house and feed each woman for the duration of her stay in Kirando Health Centre.
-$350: the total cost to transport one woman to/from from Moba Territory on the Congolese side of Lake Tanganyika to Kirando Health Centre in Tanzania.
-$1500: a significant amount to help maintain Kirando Health Centre for a full year.
