EVENT: 2010 ING New York City Marathon
EVENT DATE: Nov 07, 2010
THE STORY:
The Women’s Sports Foundation, founded in 1974, is the leader in promoting sports, health and education for girls and women. With Billie Jean King as its founder and ongoing visionary, The Women’s Sports Foundation continues to have a profound impact on female athletics, from its vigorous advocacy of Title IX legislation to providing grants and scholarships, grassroots programs for underserved girls, and groundbreaking research. An agent for change, the Women’s Sports Foundation has relationships with more than 1,000 of the world’s elite female athletes and is recognized globally for its leadership, vision, strength, expertise and influence.
Magdalena Lewy-Boulet, the top American woman finisher in the 2009 ING New York City Marathon, will again run this prestigious race as a member of the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) fundraising team.
The Women’s Sports Foundation is one of more than 100 official charities in the expanded ING New York City Marathon 2010 charity program. Last year, a total of $24 million was raised at the famous five-borough race and New York Road Runners officials are looking to eclipse that mark this year.
The Foundation is using its New York City fundraising team as a launch pad for a national online fundraising campaign in which supporters will compete in local events on behalf of the Women’s Sports Foundation and its programs.
Donations to the fundraising team will help benefit the Women’s Sports Foundation’s GoGirlGo! program, a national sports-based leadership curriculum that supports girls' health and wellness in childhood and early womanhood. The award-winning GoGirlGo! curriculum utilizes champion athletes, as well as “GoGirl” characters, to educate girls about health-risk behaviors and creates a transformative experience that positively affects girls’ minds and bodies.
