I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in Louisvile, KY and have worked with teen girls with emotional disabilities.
I have created a project in collaboration with Maryhurst Residential Treatment facility for girls, and Zubrod Stables in Prospect, KY, The project will be a Scholarship program for the girls to learn to ride Saddlebred horses. The ultimate goal will be to have the girls show in Tournaments. This should be a one of a kind, memorable experience for these girls. This program will instill confidence, develop trusting connections with horses and humans, and contribute to these girls growing into healthy, productive adults.
You might think, why therapeutic riding? It has been shown that connections with animals, such as horses, can produce a powerful sense of trust with traumatized individuals, especially when they have been abused by the ones that should love them the most. Horses do not abandon, hurt, or abuse people. I believe that a permanent scholarship program CAN make a difference in their lives.

In the summer 2010, I began taking horseback riding lessons. I thought I'd take a couple of lessons just for fun, and that would be it.
However, I fell in love with riding horses. It has given me a sense of joy and freedom that is unimaginable.
Then I started thinking: If I could reach out to others and share my joy, how great would that be? I decided that the best population to work with was disadvantaged teen girls, that are in the custody of the state. These girls have been subjected to poverty, abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Their dreams have been shattered, and often, they have little to look forward to in life.
If we can get the donations,5 of the Maryhurst girls will be involved in a scholarship program. l can think of nothing more rewarding than contributing to the enhancement of disadvantaged teen girls, so that they might grow into productive and vital members of the community. Plus, the feel-good factor will make you feel like a million bucks.
