Thanks to all who helped us raise $37,000 to fund LLS research into rare lymphomas.

STUFF ABOUT ME:

I'm the oldest and only girl of five children. In May 2008, my youngest brother, Matt, was diagnosed with Epstein Barr Virus induced hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH), a rare blood disorder, and that disease triggered the onset of Matt’s NK T-Cell lymphoma one month later. Feeling there was little I could do to help Matt physically battle the disease, I looked for other ways to help support him and make a difference in the fight against blood cancers. I found that one of Matt’s heroes, Andrew McMahon, the driving force behind the band Jack’s Mannequin and a leukemia survivor, was encouraging his fans to walk on Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Light the Night teams throughout the country. I became the captain of the Orange County Jack’s Mannequin LTN walk team, and with help from Matt, my parents, our brothers Eric, Scott, and David, their wives, in-laws, children, extended family, old friends and new friends, we raised over $17,000 for Light the Night in 2008. In 2009, we raised over $33,000 to fight blood cancers and were the top OC LTN fund raising team.

On October 3, 2009, after a year and a half battle, we lost Matt to EBV-HLH and NK T-Cell lymphoma. Since Matt died, my family and I have renewed our determination to raise funds and awareness to fight against and find a cure for EBV-HLH and NK T-Cell lymphoma. This year I am captaining a new team formed in Matt’s honor, Mother of All T-Cell Takedowns (MATT), and we are looking for new and innovative ways to raise money for Light the Night and EBV research, and we think that Crowdrise might just be it.

Please donate what you can...I've seen what blood cancer can do, and we really need to stop it.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:

If you vote for me, and by chance I get enough points to actually win something, I will not keep it. I will auction it off and donate the money to LLS, regardless of whether it's a macbook, a shower cap or the original napkin featured on the home page. I'm not in this for me...I'm in it for all of the people like my brother who have the courage to fight blood cancer with grace and dignity, never asking why they got sick but simply persevering and doing what they can to kick cancer's ass and make things better for the next patient. Although he may have lost the battle, Matt lives on...we've raised $50000 in the past two years in honor of him, and we are going to raise at least that much this year in his memory.

Thanks so much for reading this.

'May the Votes' Be Ever in Your Favor :)

Hi Christine! I hope May is treating you well!!!

We wanted to see if you're in the neighborhood to bring PURE JOY to a very deserving child's life... A $20 donation will provide a birthday celebration and cake for one of our 25 students- an experience they have NEVER HAD in their life. Can you imagine never getting to celebrate your special day and not ever eating a piece of cake in your entire life? Well, either can us, so we want to change that for our extremely hard working students!

Donate $20 to provide the once in a lifetime memory for one of our students, and we'll provide you a picture of the event- something you can cherish forever as well :)

Cheers and Happy Crowdrising,

Happy May! It’s finally spring, and kids will soon be running out the school doors into sweet summer freedom. But over 19,000,000 children across the country do not own a single book. Can you imagine a summer without even a little fun reading?

Please take a minute to check out Reader to Reader's newest fundraiser with Twive & Receive: http://twive.razoo.com/story/Amherst-Loves-Books Your donation on June 14th could help us win a share of $30,000! Now more than ever, the smallest donation can have a huge impact. You can sign up for a reminder email on our page, or if you just can't wait to get books in the hands of children, donate now. Thank you for your support!

Happy April, CR friend!
Reader to Reader is auctioning off some great artwork to raise funds for our many international programs, thanks to our friends at the ART4GOOD Foundation. If you like art, books, or education, stop by and take a look at the 35 beautiful pieces available! http://bit.ly/HjFtMO
You get a beautiful piece of art, and RTR can:
-provide special education programs for children in the Dominican Republic;
-teach women to read in Nigeria;
-keep abandoned children in childhood through reading and improve theater in rural China;
-sponsor Haitian kids to finish school;
-continue to grow our public library in a coffee-farming Costa Rican village;
AND support many other programs that do wonderful work in India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Kosovo, Ghana and other countries.
If art isn’t your thing, you can still support our programs by donating or joining our team. Take a look at my projects to see more of what we do.
All the best, and HAPPY READING,
Kat
