awareness to safe motherhood for teenage mothers
Organized by: Betha Akoth
Maternal mortality rates among teen mothers are very high in Kenya. The campaign will mobilize families social and political actors, health and education sectors to enable teenage mothers to deliver safely and get reintegrated in school and community. Young women aged 15 to 19 are twice as likely to die from complications in pregnancy as compared to older women. The chances of death in the first year for a baby born to a woman under the age of 19 years is 60% greater than that born to a woman aged 20 or older. This high mortality rate is linked to unsafe abortion procured by the teen mothers, insufficient availability of comprehensive sexual education and reproductive health services, lack of access to friendly pre-natal services among teen mothers but the biggest association is poverty. Finally there would be a walk to raise awareness on the rise of teenage pregnancies in the county.
