BENEFITING: Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation
EVENT: New York City 2016
EVENT DATE: Sep 25, 2016
On September 11th 2001 my father, Port Authority police Chief, James Romito went to work. He was in his office in Police Headquarters at the Port Authority Technical Center when the first airplane struck Tower One. He left his office and told the team of police officers he was with, "This is what we're going to do. We're going in, checking the floors for anyone, then we're going to get out."
Chief Romito and his team began evacuating floors as they continued to climb higher. When Tower Two collapsed Chief Romito gave an order to evacuate the towers. "Let's go..Let's get out of here." After giving this order his team came across a women who was unable to walk on her own. The team strapped her to a first aid chair and attempted to carry her to safety.
A colleague said that Chief Romito turned back from a clear stairway to go back for a group of firefighters. That day he made the ultimate sacrifice. As a result of his efforts so many people were able to evacuate safely and return home to their loved ones.
He was so incredibly good at his job. He was a true leader. A man who was well respected by all who knew him. He was smart, level headed and extremely humble. Chief Romito would always put others first, making the ultimate sacrifice that day.
2014 #teamromito had 10 members and raised $2,255.
2015 #teamromito had 24 members and raised $7,020
My goal for 2016 is 40 members and $8,000
Highlights during his 30 year career with the PAPD

The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.
The goal of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting our nation’s first responders and service members. Building for America’s Bravest, a program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, constructs specially adapted smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. This foundation also honors our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
