1000 SMILES - NEGRIL, JAMAICA DENTAL MISSION TRIP
Organized by: Alicia Yim
In rural Jamaica, there is only one dentist for every 100,000 people. Starting in 2003, the “1000 Smiles” project began as the world’s largest, international, humanitarian, dental project. Great Shape!'s 1000 Smiles Dental Project provides free access to dental care and education to Jamaican families. More than 350 volunteers join 1000 Smiles each year to provide Jamaicans with fillings, cleanings, extractions, sealants, dentures and oral health education in temporary dental clinics and schools. Each week during the project there are some 45 volunteers that make up the team. This year, fifteen dental students and two dentists from Temple University will travel to Negril, Jamaica in late August to offer our hands in helping change lives. Through our volunteer commitment, we will be responsible to purchase our own materials, supplies, dental instruments all on a tight graduate school budget. With your help, we will be able to change the lives of so many people. Any contribution helps, and as little as $5 can help to put a smile on a young child's face.
