1000 Smiles Temple Dental Jamaica Mission Trip
Organized by: Bindy Bryant
EVENT DATE Aug 26, 2016
As many of you know, we are currently full-time dental students at the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry and are ¾ of the way to becoming dentists! In August, 24 of us will be traveling to Negril, Jamaica as apart of the 1000 Smiles Dental Project to provide dental services to patients who are greatly in need of our care.
In rural Jamaica, there can be as little as only one dentist for every 100,000 people. We will be providing these underprivileged areas with services such as fillings, cleanings, extractions, sealants, oral health education, and other services they would otherwise not readily have access to. Also, with tourism being one of the leading industries in the country, the services we provide can be the difference between gaining employment and no employment at all.
The 1000 Smiles Dental Project provides free access to dental care and education to families in the Caribbean. As excited as we are to use what we have learned to help those in need, we could all use help financing this trip as many of us are living off student loans. We will be responsible to purchase our own materials, supplies, dental instruments, etc all on a tight grad school budget. Any contribution helps, as little as $5 can help put a smile on someone’s face.
