BENEFITING: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
EVENT DATE: Mar 31, 2012
Mileage Tracker: 6
Two years ago in November I lost my friend Bridget to depression. Bridget was an amazing person and her death was tragic in so many ways. I miss her every day and I really want to do something positive with this experience.
I can remember supporting Bridget as she trained for the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k in 2005 as well as cheering her on from the sidelines as she raced. Those continue to be very positive memories for me. I have decided that I want to run the same race in her honor on March 31, 2012. I hope to use this event to raise awareness and to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
More than 33,000 people commit suicide in the US each year and worldwide the number is a staggering 1,000,000. According to the World Health Organization suicides worldwide have increased by 60% over the last 45 years. The AFSP is an organization dedicated to research, legislative changes and educational programs all in an effort to reduce suicide rates. They also offer support to those of us left behind after someone close to us takes his or her own life.
Until very recently, I was officially a non-runner. I will maintain a fitness blog at tova10k.wordpress.com to chronicle my journey to this race.
Thanks for taking the time to visit this site. Some of you knew Bridget and may perhaps be interested in running the race with me and/or becoming a team member to raise money, if so please contact me at email@example.com or you can register to run directly at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10k site.
