Marie Sherick

So I have this friend with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). And she 28 years old. And she is incredible. And she is wonderful. And she does anything for anyone. She likes to do things. And by things, I mean live, and breathe, and love life. She also LOVES to cycle, climb huge mountains, raft, run, snowshoe, not snowboard but we are working on that, camp and basically just live her life.

She is riding for the third straight year in the Colorado MS Bike Ride. This ride is over 150 miles. And she is doing this because she still can. Because she will fight this disease, a disease with no cure, for as long as she can.

Did I mention she has MS?

Well, see that is what this is all about - MS.

Do you know about MS? I mean, I know that people talk about it on TV and people try to raise money for it but do you actually know what MS does to people?

MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another.
MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, and blindness and more. These problems may be permanent or may come and go.
There are days when you wake up and you cannot see, or you cannot hear, or you cannot walk. Can you imagine? Waking up and these things just being gone? Poof... overnight. And you don't know when or even if they might come back. I know that I can’t even think of that ever happening. And it makes me sick to my stomach that this happens to her. And I don’t want it to. Not to her or anybody else.

Did you know that MS affects approximately 400,000 Americans, and every week about 200 people are diagnosed? World-wide, MS affects about 2.5 million people.

Please, I don’t know you and you don’t know me or my friend. But chances are- you might know someone with this disease. Help me to raise money to fight this for them.

All donations- no matter how great or small, are going to the Colorado MS Bike Ride for 2011.
