BENEFITING: People for the American Way Foundation
EVENT DATE: Sep 01, 2013
**People for the American Way Foundation is the fiscal sponsor for the Dream Defernders. Funds raised here for the American Way Foundation will be donated to the Dream Defenders.**
On September 1st, 2013, I intend to hike the nearly 20 miles of Mount San Jacinto's Cactus-To-Clouds Trail in Palm Springs to the peak's summit of 10,833'. This climb up the largest elevation gain in the continental US, will serve as a fundraising benefit for Florida's Dream Defenders, which pursues justice for black and brown youth in defense of the American Dream.
In light of the recent Zimmerman verdict, I am working to overturn Stand Your Ground laws and the deeply ingrained racism that permeates our civil society and justice system. Please consider making a donation to my fundraiser for Dream Defenders. I hope to raise 11 hundred dollars for 11 thousand feet. No matter how small or large your contribution -- $10, $25, $100 -- it all adds up!
Dream Defenders is a black and brown youth-led social and economic justice organization currently conducting a sit-in at Gov. Rick Scott's office in the Florida Capitol to (1) repeal Stand Your Ground, (2) ban racial profiling, and (3) end the school-to-prison pipeline. As of Monday July 29th, they have been occupying his office for 14 days.
In addition to their #TAKEOVERFL campaign, Dream Defenders aims to bring social change by training and organizing youth and students in nonviolent civil disobedience, civic engagement, and direct action while creating a sustainable network of youth and student leaders to take action and create real change in their communities. Their work is driving real change. Together with your support, we can help them achieve their mission to enact Trayvon's Law.
Any amount helps, even just a few dollars. With your help and encouragement, I will scale that mountain in Palm Springs to defend the American Dream for the millions who are falling through the cracks of our social and economic order, growing up and living in poverty, or attempting to navigate an underfunded education system and society that criminalizes them. Your encouragement, financial or otherwise, is greatly appreciated. Let's support a new generation of empowered people of color. Please consider donating to my trek so that these leaders and organizers can continue making social change a reality, building concrete power and defending the dreams of their community -- of our America, of our Dream.
Thank you so much. Sending you love and appreciation!
