Throughout the years, the 12 Planes of Christmas fundraising drive has helped the restoration efforts of many CAF aircraft in need, becoming our largest annual fundraising campaign. It is important to us to restore our aircraft to flying condition, and preserve a complete collection of combat aircraft flown by all military services of the United States (and select aircraft of other nations). Therefore, donations made to 12 Planes of Christmas have a significant impact on our mission of preservation and restoration, and allow us to continue to educate younger generations about the invaluable contributions military aviation has made in assuring our nation’s freedom.
Each year, 12 projects are carefully selected from across our organization by the Flying Museum board, who determine which projects are in most critical need. These 12 are chosen from among our more than 160 vintage military aircraft, and are selected not only for their financial need, but also for their demonstrated impact in their respective communities. When making a contribution to the 12 Planes of Christmas, donors are directly supporting the CAF at its most impactful points.
The Restoration Grant Fund
One of the most impactful programs within the CAF, The Restoration Grant Fund, receives much of its annual funding and support through the 12 Planes of Christmas Program. This program was created to help CAF units get their aircraft back into the air faster. Since it was created in 2008, the Restoration Grant Fund has supported the projects and efforts of CAF units all around the nation, becoming one of the most highly valued programs in the organization. Today, the fund has provided more than $1 million in funding – and is a dollar-for-dollar match program, stimulating almost $2 million worth of work on key projects.
24 airplanes have received support from the Restoration Grant Fund and 15 of them have made it back into the air so far. The donations made to the Restoration Grant Fund during this past 12 Planes of Christmas year exceeded $24,000 allowing us to issue matching grants to every airplane unit that applied for support through the program.
The CAF airplanes that received support in the form of a matching grant include:
The Dixie Wing T-34 Project
The Dixie Wing P-63 Project
The Nevada Wing AT-19 Project
As a thank you for donating to the Restoration Grant Fund, we will send you a free CAF ornament with any donation of $25 or more.
