As many of you already know on November 4, 2012 I'll be running the New York City Marathon, my very first. The boom of the starting gun is near. In a matter of days, along with thousands from around the world, I'll be traversing the boulevards and neighborhoods of this grand dame we call New York City. So far, it's been a very fulfilling and long journey, over five hundred training miles logged and many, many early mornings, to get me ready for the big day but now I need your help. How you ask? Education and access to opportunity are both issues very near and dear to my heart so I'll be running for the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF) (www.shawncartersf.com) and we're doing a 12-Day Challenge!
The SCSF works to increase access to college for motivated yet under-privileged inner-city youths and young adults by removing some of the financial burdens associated with the cost of attendance. The SCSF provides individual grants ranging from $1500 - $2500 to students who qualify, from admission to graduation. The grants are used to cover tuition and different supplemental education expenses, i.e.: lab fees, travel and select costs of living, while the recipient is in school. All recipients are required to perform community service and serve as a mentor to future grant awardees. Each one teach one.
I need you to think about all the breaks and favorable bounces that you've had and make a tax-deductible per mile pledge. Donations can be as small as $1 dollar per mile or as large a you'd like but the important thing to know is that it all matters and works to make a difference.
I want to thank you in advance for your support. See you in Central Park at the finish line!
