Once again, on the Third day of July, runners and walkers of many different talent levels will endure the heat of summer adding miles upon miles to their bodies for the 3rd Annual 12 Hours for Independence. The beneficiary is still the Wounded Warrior Project as we hope to give back to the ones that have given so much that we may have our independence.
When: Thursday, July 3, 2014 6:00AM - 6:00PM
Where: Freedom Park and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, part of the Carolina Thread Trail The Course
A looped 1.41 mile course with 59 ft of total elevation climb per loop beginning on the pond loop beside the sign for Overpopulation of Geese by the bridge to the Nature Center. The loop proceeds over the bridge, north on the greenway, and back towards the park just before the tennis courts. Passing the baseball fields, the train, and the playground, the loop follows the pond loop on the hill side towards the south end of Freedom Park by Princeton Ave., and back around to the start. The course passes two different water fountains for those who do not care to carry water. In the event of unbearable fatigue/exhaustion, there are two possible shortcuts. Should medical assistance be required, the course is less than a mile from the main hospital of the Carolinas Health Care system. Be Advised this Course is part of one of the most popular public use segments of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks & Rec.
Why: The Purpose of the Wounded Warrior Project is 3 fold:
- To raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members.
To help injured service members aid and assist each other.
To provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
Who: You. Even if you are not into running long distance or running at all, your time and support make a difference. Feel free to come out on the day of the event and simply walk a loop. Share some encouraging words. Wave your Amerian flag. Run a few loops to help keep the folks who will be out all day on pace. Anyway that you will be able to show up will be uplifting to help the participants putting their body to the test.
Most importantly, this is a fundraiser. In the past, some have pledged dollars based on total miles, goals met, or simple flat donations. All will help.

Bryan Hojnacki, experienced ultramarathon runner, fundraiser, and man who knows no limitations between running on concrete or trail. Unphased by heat exposure and pavement pounding, the likely contender for this year's title.
Daniel Keller, experienced runner of many events, owner of Omega Sports, and a huge heart to give back to the community. Dan is backed by a strong group of Omega Nation runners who always keep his spirits high.
