BENEFITING: Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Mar 12, 2016
13 regular folks are watching 12 full-length feature films in a row. Why do this crazy thing? To raise money for independent theaters.
We will be actively watching each film, there will be no sleeping, there will be no leaving the room without pausing, and we will finish within 24 hours.
This is serious business, because we care deeply about independent film, and the theaters that bring these films to the masses. Independent theaters matter. They do crazy stuff that nobody else can do, and one day, this marathon will spread until there are hundreds of groups raising money for their local independent theaters.
This particular marathon is raising money for the Carolina Theatre, a North Carolina-based non-profit. More specifically, we raise funds to directly sponsor a series of double features they host called Retrofantasma. They show two movies in a row, each shown with an intro that describes the cultural context of the time (what other movies were popular, what people were saying about the film) and then each movie is preceded by previews that you would have seen if you watched it on opening day.
There's an intermission with a raffle and it's a hell of a fun time.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS? Because I want to make the point that independent theaters are struggling more than ever, partly because of the rise of streaming media. We're going to flip the tables and use that media to keep the spirit of independent film alive.
