THE STORY:

In October 2012, I pledged to run the Kilimanjaro Marathon (half) to raise $500.00 for 13 charities, #13for13. On March 3, 2013, I completed the half but unfortunately did not meet the $500 mark for each of the charities. I'm commited to raise all of the money I had promised, so I will continue to run road races all over Europe in an effort to spread the word about charities like East Meets West's Breath of Life program.

Why am I running? I am running to get the word out about a community of ones… people trying to do good things in the world, making living a bit easier for someone else. Making a sacrifice for someone else, thinking globally, and being gracious. They all have stories of inspiration, and through running this marathon, I am hoping to raise awareness for 13 charities…. 13 miles for 13 charities.

East Meets West is one of the 13.

Every year four million newborns die world-wide, most from easily treatable diseases, and 99% of all newborn deaths occur in the developing world.* Access to medical equipment and trained staff are seemingly simple solutions to save the lives of innocent babies, and East Meets West (EMW) is meeting that need through the implementation of their “Breath of Life” program.

The concept of the Breath of Life (BOL) is to provide standard, sustainable medical equipment to hospitals and medical centers as well as targeted training to medical health professionals. In particular, the BOL program provides CPAP machines, “continuous positive air pressure” machines to use with newborn babies born with respiratory issues. In the United States, most small, local hospitals have between four and six CPAP machines; in hospitals in developing nations such as Vietnam…. none.

When EMW piloted the CPAP machines at the National Hospital of Pediatrics (NHP) in Hanoi in 2003, they saw 24-hour infant mortality rates drop from 30% to 10% in one year as a result of the intervention. As of 2009, BOL had equipped over 95% of Vietnam’s provinces with CPAP machines.*

Please consider donating money on behalf of #13for13 to East Meets West's BOL program and help purchase a breathing machine.
