13 Miles for a United South Africa #NoToXenophobia
Organized by: Yolana Du Plessis
EVENT DATE May 16, 2015
On Sunday May 19 we set off to run a half marathon in Central Park, New York City. Amidst the excitement, there have been some devastating violent attacks on foreign nationals, mostly from other countries in Africa, in the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal, and the province of Gauteng in South Africa. Many families have been displaced as result, fleeing their homes and businesses to seek refuge in temporary sites that have been set up by different non-profits, community members, and civic organizations.
As Zuki and I passed the two mile mark she mentioned the idea that we should have posted a challenge on Facebook for our friends and families in South Africa to pledge R1 (South African Rand) for every kilometer we ran that day to raise funds for Springs Care which has been caring for hundreds of displaced families since the outbreak of xenophobic attacks. Two minutes later we found ourselves stopping in the middle of the race to take action and make the post...
We have been so grateful for the support and donations made from our South African community which has inspired us to engage our American community in our efforts to ensure the displaced families have food and supplies. Zuki and I both plan to take on another half marathon in less than four weeks to continue raising funds. I will be running the Brooklyn Half marathon in New York City and Zuki will be running the Great Wall Half Marathon in China. Our races take place on May 16 although several time zones apart.
Please join our efforts in helping bring unity to South Africa. All donations will go to Springs Care and Gift of the Givers.
We appreciate your support!
