2,000 Chairs to Make a Difference
Organized by: C.D. Singh
SOLS 24/7 teaches a get-ready-for-life curriculum through the furthest corners of Cambodia. We teach in the most impoverished provinces to students who would otherwise be without an education. Though we have tried to spread our 50 centers as conveniently as possible, we still have students who walk hours to get to us each day. That is how eager they are for an education.
Our curriculum encompasses 6 basic subjects - English, Marketing, Accounting, Management, Administration, Computers, and SYB (Start Your Business). Throughout the time our students are enrolled, we also try to instill personal skills such as confidence, empathy, integrity, etc.
All our classes are taught in English, and we aim to teach the language in a straightforward, efficient way, so that nearly all our students, ages 5-40, are able to speak at a conversational level within 3-6 months. With approximately 400 students at the main center and Phnom Penh and an average of 100 pupils at each rural, province center, we're able to reach hundreds of students.
As an organization we try to anticipate the students' needs before they arise. However, because all our funds go into opening new centers, making sure the children have enough materials to study, and the fact that the education we provide is 100% free, we also have to cross obstacles as we come to them.
We are currently fundraising to buy 2,000 chairs for our students across the 50 centers. At most of these centers, students sit on the floors, or wooden benches at best, though during the rainy season (approximately 6 months of the year in Cambodia) the wood expands, splinters, and becomes painful to sit on. Their backs hurt from leaning over their books and writing on the floor, and through we are trying our best to provide as much comfort as possible, we need your help with funding.
Each chair costs $9. These are sturdy, plastic chairs that weather the extreme heat and torrential rain that Cambodia experiences. 2,000 chairs at $9 takes us to $18,000.
Each table costs us $35. We get our supplies direct from surplus wood and iron, and our volunteers make them at each center, which eliminates labour costs. 800 tables would cost $28,000.
Every dollar takes us closer to a chair, and every chair gets us closer to being able to provide better service to our students. Please take a moment to help us make a difference in their lives. What you would spend casually, without thinking, means the world to them.
