Dear Family & Friends,
Thank you so very much for sponsoring me in this year’s New York City ING Marathon. I am thrilled to announce that because of your wonderful generosity, I have raised almost $2,235 and counting for Gilda’s Club of New York City. This brings my three year total for Gilda’s Club to almost $14,000.
Your support is so important and will make a difference for Gilda’s Club, a place where men, women and children living with cancer – and their families and friends – can join together to build social and emotional support as a supplement to medical care.
I was honored to run in and complete my fourth marathon in memory of my mom Diane. I am pretty sure she was with me every step of the way on this one. Especially, from miles 18-26.2 as the most unrelenting and excruciating leg cramps I have ever experienced hit both of my legs like a bus. I wanted to quit. Like, a lot. But…I thought of my mom and all of your love and support and I somehow kept on going. I like to think that she was looking down and smiling while at the same time thinking I was certifiably insane. That would be about right. :)
Thank you so much again for your friendship, your love and for your continued support. It means the world to me to have raised so much money in memory of my mom.
On November 6, 2011, I will be running in my fourth ING NYC Marathon in memory of my mom Diane Doolin. As many of you know, my brothers and I lost our mom to breast cancer more than 12 years ago. Sadly, my beautiful niece and nephews never got a chance to meet their grandmother, so each year, I run to keep her memory alive while raising money for a wonderful charity - Gilda’s Club of NYC.
Gilda’s Club NYC is named after comedienne Gilda Rader who once said that having cancer gave her membership in an elite club she’d rather not belong. At Gilda’s Club New York City thousands of individuals and families come to the downtown clubhouse and 6 satellite locations throughout New York City annually as they face cancer in their lives. Gilda’s Club NYC provides support and networking groups, educational lectures, workshops and social activities as individuals learn to live with cancer in their lives. This is all free of charge to members.
While less than 1% of the world’s population will ever run a marathon in their lifetime,3 out of every 4 families will be affected by cancer. I know my support will extend well beyond the race. My finish line will be a starting line for others. Please join me in supporting Gilda’s Club NYC. A gift of any size will impact the members and program of Gilda’s Club NYC.
I still have many weeks of training to go for this year’s marathon and the commitment seems like a distance but as my mom always taught me - anything is possible. It is because of her strength, courage and guidance that I take on this daunting task of running 26.2 miles each year. On most mornings when I am up and running by 6 am and on weekends when my long run could be 15-20 miles, I wonder if I am just plain crazy.
But still, I keep going. I keep going for my mom. For my family. For your family. For anyone who has lost someone to cancer much too young.
Every gift counts - your support truly does make a difference.
