Hey. Remember last summer when I volunteered at Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls? Of course you do—I haven't shut the feck up about it since. It was the greatest place on earth. I got to be a counselor to a group of teenagers, lead a workshop on critical listening and discussion, and become part of the most amazing, fulfilling, head-banging organization that ever existed. Highlights included:
**Little kids writing and performing hip-hop lyrics like "N-Y-P-D! Why you wanna mess wit me?!"
**Bands with names like Strawberry Spleen and 2 Legit.
**The band of 8-year-olds who broke up on stage at the showcase immediately following their performance.
**The 18-year-old Jennifer Hudson lookalike whose dream was to be on American Idol begrudgingly gave up the mic to sit behind the drum kit ... and discovered that she could play the drums. Like, really, really well. She left camp declaring that she was getting a kit as soon as she got home.
**The temporary Tofurkey and lavender unicorn tattoos I got at camp that were plastered to my skin for half the summer.
Camp was Utopia, as far as I could tell. I'm asking you to donate again this year. Last year, I was the second-highest fundraiser. I was called onstage at the showcase and given Mardi Gras beads. My teenage campers were in the front row jumping and shouting my name. People, I WANT MORE BEADS. HELP ME GET MORE BEADS.
Please pledge whatever you can to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls a.k.a. Get Jeanne Fury More Beads in the Name of Rock N Roll.
