The Tiba Foundation supports efforts to provide sustainable healthcare to people in rural Kenya. They do this through a model of enabling community members to care for themselves and improve their quality of life, educating them on such issues as malaria and HIV prevention. They have a year round clinic and are developing a women and children's hospital in Western Kenya to treat the people of Siaya district.
In 2010 David Mai, Traveled with Matibabu organization, the Kenyan side of the Tiba foundation, on a two week surgical mission. There he provided comprehensive anesthesia care to a variety of patients and surgical procedures. Moreover a part of the goal of these surgical missions is to have a cross-cultural education with local health care providers on how to provide better quality care though various methods of delivery while gaining insight on how anesthesia care is provided in third world countries.
In January of 2012 David plans to return to Western Kenya to again provide anesthesia services in the perioperative environment, teach local providers about safe and effective care, while taking back invaluable perspective on treatment modalities adopted there. This surgical mission will last for two weeks and will be in conjunction with surgeons, anesthetists and anesthesiologists from around the country adding to the enriching experience of philanthropy and education. All contributions are tax deductible and will be allocated toward airfare and room and board while in Kenya.
