Hi everyone! Thanks for visiting my page for the 2012 Run for Mayan Youth.
Last summer I traveled to Lago de Atitlan in the Guatemalan Highlands to study Spanish language and Mayan culture. My teacher Luis, a young Tz'utujil Mayan, quickly became a lifelong friend. He told me the story of five hundred years of post-colonial turmoil, and how ongoing social and political oppression continues to impact his people today. One of the most marginalizing issues is the lack of access to education. Without this, young people can't participate in the changing economy or preserve their endangered Mayan culture.
This Sunday, May 6th, I will run the Vancouver Half Marathon. This run kicks off my personal mission to raise money for the Maya Educational Foundation during 2012, a time of great significance in the Mayan long count calendar.
The Maya Educational Foundation is an awesome organization dedicated to the support of Mayan communities in Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. The money we raise will benefit an MEF fund dedicated to providing scholarship support to Tz'utujil Mayan youth in the Atitlan region.
Traditional Mayan lore tells us that 2012 marks a time of unique potential, with the completion of the current 5,126 year cycle and the beginning of a new one. What an ideal time to support positive growth in one of the few remaining Mayan communities.
Please join me by making a financial contribution to help preserve a place for Mayan culture in our world.
More info about the Maya Educational Foundation can be found at these links. All contributions are tax-deductable, as well.
