Hello all -
Five years ago last month, Zachary was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He was 22 months old. However, this is not where his journey began. He began receiving physical and occupational therapy when he was 10 months old. A year later, he began receiving speech therapy. Six months after that, he was diagnosed. One month after that, he began intensive behavioral therapy. He has been in some form of 'therapy' to help him overcome the challenges autism brings almost his entire life. He turns 7 years old in just three weeks. I cannot believe how long he has endured having to 'work' to "fit in" with the world.
It is for this reason that I have signed up to walk/run the Orange County Half Marathon being held on Sunday, May 6. In addition, Zachary is running in the Kids OC Marathon. He began training for this in February. The kids marathon is Saturday, May 5, where he will be running 1.5 mile. His training up to this day will be a total of 24.7 miles, so when he runs this last mile with hundreds of other children, he will have run 26.2 miles! He will receive a BIG medal - mostly what he is concerned with!
You see, Zachary has NO idea how hard he HAS worked and how hard he continues to work. He continues to receive physical and occupational therapy services, along with our in-home sessions. I also work at home with him on learning social skills and social thinking, which is very difficult, but he is a trooper! I have learned more about me, people, and life than I ever could have imagined by having a child with autism.
I wanted to do something to give back just a little for all of the information I received from the organization listed below: TACA - Talk About Curing Autism. You can read more about them below, but suffice to say, this organization has done so much for those new to the ever-increasing world of autism.
I figured, if this person, who has only lived for 7 years can work this hard day after day, week after week, year after year, and come so far, then I can walk 13.1 miles. He doesn't know he has autism, but He is why I walk. It has been a difficult journey at times, but I am grateful I have been given this wonderful gift called Zachary. He is my sun and my moon.
Thank you for your time and any donation you can make to TACA.
All my love, Elena

Autism currently affects 1 in every 91 children today. It is estimated there are over 1 million people in the United States alone with autism. Autism affects each individual differently and at different levels of severity. Some people with autism are severely affected, cannot speak, require constant one-on-one care, and are never able to live independently. While others who have less severe symptoms, can communicate, and eventually acquire the necessary skills to live on their own.
Train 4 Autism is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by parents of children with autism. Train 4 Autism is a foundation dedicated to bringing together a community of athletes, physically active, and socially conscious people who are committed to raising awareness and funds for research and treatment for those living with Autism and their families. Fund raising and volunteer opportunities for individual athletes, teams and entire families include marathons, half marathons, 10Ks, 5Ks, walks, triathlons, swimming, and cycling events.
Today, there are many treatment centers and research programs all doing vital work, and all carrying different yet important messages and missions. Train 4 Autism provides the infrastructure, technology, and support for participants to raise funds and contribute to the programs about which they are most passionate.
Train 4 Autism is proud to partner with Talk About Curing Autism (TACA). Funds raised with the 2012 OC Marathon Train 4 Autism team benefit TACA in support of the wonderful work that they do for the Autism Community. TACA is a parent founded nonprofit organization based in Orange County CA.
