Welcome to the 2013 UNC Dance Marathon!
We fund what medical insurance cannot for patients and their families at N.C. Children's Hospital. We believe that our community can make a difference by helping remove the burdens associated with hospitalization, such as travel expenses, food and electricity for medical equipment. By removing these burdens and providing the funding for research and additional pediatric programs we can all help provide the fullest possible care to children. The mission of the UNC Dance Marathon is to unite the University, community and state in fostering emotional and financial support that improves the quality of life for the patients and families of N.C. Children's Hospital.
The 2013 marathon will begin on February 15 at 7:30 pm and end 24 hours later on February 16. The marathon takes place on the UNC campus in Fetzer Gym and any UNC student can sign up as a dancer. Motivator and Volunteer registration is open to anyone who wants to get an inside look at the UNC Dance Marathon. So now that the details are out of the way, what actually happens? The marathon is 24 hours filled with not only dancing but also:
Performances - bands, a capella groups, dance groups and more
Games - cheer pong, basketball, guitar hero, four square - just to name a few
Food - lots of catered, delicious food!
Activities - sunrise at Kenan Stadium, an afternoon on Hooker fields and making cards for kids
Being a Dancer
Signing up to dance at the marathon means a few things:
You are pledging to stand for 24 hours at the marathon - we stand for 24 hours to show our support for the patients and families of N.C. Children's Hospital. This represents the 24 hours patients and families fight every day to get better.
You are committing to raise $150 by February 15 - $150 can pay for a family's electricity bill for one month, 150 slices of pizza to feed families on Thursday night Pizza Dinners, or phone cards for 30 families to make calls from the hospital.
You are signing up to make an emotional and financial difference in the lives of the patients and families at N.C. Children's Hospital.
Being a Motivator
Motivating is a great way to contribute to UNC Dance Marathon! Not only does it give you a chance to participate in this magnificent event, but it also gives you a chance to interact with and motivate the dancers. Motivators are an essential part of the marathon since they keep the dancers excited about the cause during the 24 hours of the marathon. Each shift lasts about six hours and Motivators get to dress up costumes related to that shift's theme. Motivators commit to raising $60 for their first shift, plus $30 for each additional shift they sign up. Get a glimpse of what UNC-DM is about by signing up to motivate!
Being a Volunteer
Volunteers are an integral part of the marathon and help with various activities from helping with meals to cleaning up to manning key areas, all necessary activities to keep the marathon running smoothly! Each shift lasts about three hours and you're invited to volunteer for as many shifts as you'd like. Volunteers commit to raising $25 for their first shift, plus $10 per additional shift. Regardless if you've volunteered or danced in the past, sign up today and get a glimpse of what UNC-DM is about!
