THE STORY:

Missy Zolecki wrote -

November 10, 2013 our incredible team will run the Inaugural Naperville Half/Marathon to benefit the Fragile X LINKS Group of Greater Chicago and the National Fragile X Foundation. Including our very own Fragile X Xpert, Dr. Elizabeth Berry-Kravis!

Fragile X is a family of disorders, including Fragile X Syndrome, FXTAS, and FXPOI.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, behavioral and learning challenges and various physical characteristics. Though FXS occurs in both genders, males are more frequently affected than females, and generally with greater severity. Fragile X is the leading cause of inherited mental impairment and the leading known genetic cause of Autism. As many as 1:130 women are carriers of Fragile X. 1:3600-4000 boys /1:4000-6000 girls are born with Fragile X Syndrome.

FXTAS(Fragile X Associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome) affects those with the pre-mutation. It is an “adult onset” neurodegenerative disorder, occurring more commonly in males than females. Onset is usually over 50 years of age, and most individuals had no related medical, developmental or neurological problems prior to the appearance of FXTAS symptoms. Females comprise only a small part of the FXTAS population, and their symptoms tend to be less severe.

FXPOI(Fragile X Associate Primary Ovarian Insufficiency)affects pre-mutation females. They may experience infertility and pre-mature menopause.

As scientists uncover the precise links between autism and the Fragile X gene, potential treatments to reverse many of the core symptoms of both autism and fragile X syndrome (FXS) are moving closer to reality.

Your donation will help support local events as well as support the National Fragile X Foundation in support of their mission.
