BENEFITING: Leake and Watts Services, Inc.
Dedicated to helping all youth reach their full potential, The Leake & Watts Biondi High School is a year-round program that supports youth with significant academic deficits and histories of truancy, due to emotional and behavioral challenges, learning and developmental disabilities, and other challenging circumstances. When youth first arrive at the Biondi School, 83% have math and reading skill levels that are significantly below their grade level. Some even test at a third grade reading level. While the teaching staff is proud to help youth achieve an average of 1.2 months of progress for every one month of enrollment at the Biondi School, it is extremely important to begin preparing many of our students for hands-on careers and help them explore many different options for their future. In order to prepare students for secondary education and/or employment, Biondi offers vocational training programs in cosmetology, animation, photography, graphic design, culinary arts or maintenance, which students are able to take in addition to their core classes.
The Biondi Cosmetology Program trains students to perform tasks in the professional beauty industry and pass the New York State Board exam, allowing students to graduate with both a high school diploma and a Cosmetology License. Students who graduate from our Cosmetology Program are prepared to find immediate employment as a Nail Technician, Hair Stylist or Esthetician. The program also helps students build time management skills, social skills and self-esteem.
An important experience for the students in the Cosmetology Program, the International Beauty Show is an educational convention designed to educate beauty professionals and cosmetology students about the newest and most advanced approaches to the professional market in salon retailing, education and distribution. Attending the Beauty Show gives students the opportunity to take hair cutting, styling, coloring methods, barbering techniques and salon management classes with top stylists in the beauty industry. The students learn specialized techniques and the stylists’ own tricks, as well as how to use new makeup and hair care products before they have even hit the shelves. Last year, Biondi students enjoyed themselves a great deal, and learned so much that motivated them to come back into the classroom and continue pursuing a professional career in the beauty industry.
The students are very excited to attend again this year, but in order to make this critical experience a reality, we need YOUR help! In order to take students to the International Beauty Show, we need to cover the cost of Beauty Show tickets, transportation and parking, and the products and supplies that the students will use as they are learning new techniques. Please consider donating so that the Biondi Cosmetology and Vocational Program teachers are able to take their students to the 2014 International Beauty Show!
