My Personal Message:
Hello Family and Friends,
On July 27, 2014, I will be running my first half marathon to help fundraise for a non-profit organization called Operation Access (OA), which I have had the pleasure to intern with over the last few months.
I decided to run for charity for a number of reasons:
1) I have never ran an official marathon before
2) I love waking up at the butt crack of dawn to go running (only half true)
3) I will be moving to Chicago a week later… packing up my things and dedicating my life to nursing school = no more fun time
4) Its going to be such a high running alongside thousands of other people who are also running for charities
& most importantly…
5) because I have grown such an appreciation for the work and volunteerism that Operation Access does every day .
As someone who wanted to join the Peace Corps after graduation, I have realized that OA provides that opportunity of service right here in my community, San Francisco CA (& even Orange County). I have seen all of the hard work, program planning, and community outreach that goes into operating a non-profit organization and it really amazes me. Come the end of July, I have chose to dedicate this run to the super hero staff at Operation Access who have mentored me, the doctors, nurses and health care professionals who volunteer out of love and humbleness, my always supportive family and friends who continue to push and encourage me and to anyone and everyone running, working, and living for a cause greater than ourselves.
But first let me give you a little background of what OA does.
Operation Access makes it possible for low-income, uninsured people to get needed surgical and specialty care, free of charge, through a medical volunteer network in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Sonoma counties.
OA served people who are simply trying to make ends meet, who are trying to provide for their families and care for their children and cannot afford to pay for necessary medical care out of pocket. OA and our volunteers bring these people healing and hope, and enable them to live healthy and productive lives.
In 2013, over 1800 people had operations like hernia and knee repairs and cataract removals that were donated by doctors, nurses, technicians who volunteer their time and skills, and the hospitals that support them. The value of the care provided in 2013 was over $20.5 million.
· For every $1 we receive, we arrange $14.96 in donated medical care for low-income, uninsured patients.
· Last year the total value of donated care exceeded $20.5 million.
· The average annual income of OA patients treated in 2013 was $11,100 for individuals and $20,550 for a family of four.
· Over the past 20 years, 2500 medical professionals have provided 12000 services to 9000 individuals and the value of donated care is over $110 million.
So here is what I'll be doing to help fundraise.
1. Yancy’s Saloon Happy Hour:
As part of my fundraiser, I will be hosting a Happy Hour night at the sports bar I work at called Yancy’s Saloon (located on 9th and Irving in San Francisco). My wonderful bosses Alan and Sandro have agreed to serve special drinks and give drink specials to those wearing a wristband on the night of the event. Also, my lovely friend and manager of Patxi’s will be donating lots of Chicago style pizza for those who come early and support.
Here are the logistics.
Date: Thursday, June 12, 2014
Time: 7- 11 PM (early arrivals welcomed)
Location: Yancy’s Saloon, 734 Irving St San Francisco, CA 94122
Cover Charge: $10 (includes pizza and wristband for drink specials)
100% of proceeds are going to OA and will help me reach my fundraiser goal!!
Drink Specials with wristband: 2 for the price of one well shots ($4) , $1 off draft beer ($4) , $5 - $6 cocktails that I will be creating lol . But, I’ll post them as I go. 2. Donate Directly:
If you would like to donate but cannot attend the event or live in So Cal, I ask that you please consider sponsoring me for $1 per mile ($13 for 13.1 miles).
My goal is to raise $750 before the date of the marathon =)
& Remember, for every $1 you donate, OA arranges $14.96 in donated medical care for low-income, uninsured patients.
Help support OA and our amazing volunteers! This is the second year that we are an official charity of the SF Marathon. Please join our Team!
