"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone" -Neale Donald Walsch
In the search for a great adventure for 2015- something challenging and demanding, physically and mentally- while experiencing a new culture and people, I knew this was the year for Everest Base Camp. I'll be headed to the Himalayas and trekking to 18,300'. Yes, this is for me, but it's also for my passion: Flying Kites and the children and community they empower.
I have sponsored two children at Flying Kites for almost seven years now. Last year, I traveled to Kenya and arrived at Flying Kites, five years after my first visit. When I walked through the front gates I first saw Miriam, who was born with cerebral palsy, playing jump-rope, and was then greeted by Mach, who had suffered immensley from malnutrition, with a firm handshake and confident smile. I was able to witness firsthand how the children are growing and flourishing at Flying Kites. During my time teaching health lessons at the school, I was able to see the children excel in the classroom. Not only are they motivated, and eager to learn, but they support and encourage each other to work hard and succeed. It was a gift for me to be in their presence those few months and to tell them on a regular basis how much we care about them.
For me, being a sponsor of two of the incredible children at Flying Kites is a great way to be part of something bigger, to be a world citizen, and to give back. In addition to being a sponsor this year, I'm going to climb to Mount Everest Base Camp.
I've made it my goal to raise $4,000 to go directly towards the home and school in Kenya. Flying Kites inspires one to love, hope, learn, grow, teach, and give. I hope you feel inspired to join me on this journey and to become a part of the family that is Flying Kites.
A little About- "Flying Kites was started when a little boy living in an overcrowded orphanage in the slums of Nairobi challenged a group of volunteers to see him as a child, and not as an orphan. Orphans need bowls of rice. Children need families, people to invest in the quality of their education and the possibility of their dreams. They need nourishment and inspiration and adventures and security.
At Flying Kites, we believe in children. And so, in the Aberdares Mountains of Kenya, we have built a Home and Primary School for orphaned children who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. Through our emphasis on exemplary care, education, and compassion, children who have suffered the devastating effects of poverty are being empowered to change the world. Believe with us."
