"How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live"
~ Henry David Thoreau
First off, a huge thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
This summer, I'll be taking a major step towards a life-long dream of mine as I head out on a 2-week journey through Himalayas to Mt. Everst Base Camp with an incredible Boston-based nonprofit called Flying Kites. But this has nothing to do with me. What will make this opportunity truly special isn't the journey we embark on but the children we'll be climbing for.
Some background - Flying Kites was started when a little boy living in an overcrowded orphanage in Nairobi challenged a group of volunteers to see him as a child, not as an orphan. Orphans need bowls of rice, cups of water, and anonymous donations - Children need families, education, and dreams just like mine and yours. Through outreach, partnerships, grants, and scholarships, Flying Kites works with local and regional communities along with social enterprises, NGO's & the public sector to create a sustainable system of support for the children and families it serves.
I urge you all to take a peak at their website or any of the accompanying links below. Know that every cent you donate will go to an incredible cause - providing not just infrastructure but hope and possibility for these children.
Almost 5 years ago, I was lucky enough to have a similar experience before entering college - climbing to Kilimanjaro's Uhuru Peak before heading south to spend time volunteering at Tanzanian school. While the feeling I had standing on the roof of Africa looking over the continent was one I can't describe, it didn't come close to the realization of the true impact I was able to make.
Thanks to Flying Kites and the incredible Virginia Fresne as I'm humbled to have another opportunity like that one. But even more, I thank all of you. It will be through your belief in my cause that I will keep climbing, and it will be through your genorosity that we will make a difference.
Flying Kites is asking each of us to raise $4000, but I know we can do better. I'm setting the bar at $6000 initially, with every hope of climbing even higher.
Please reach out to me with any questions or to learn more about Flying Kites, our Everest trip, or the children you'll be helping. And please help me spread the word and pass this link along.
