THE STORY:

Thanks to everyone who has donated!  If you haven't yet, there's still time (and I still have a long way to go to hit my $3k goal)!

The race was held on July 26, 2015.  I had so many people here back at home who watched my progress througout the day; I could feel all the good vibes!  The day presented some challenges but if it were easy it wouldn't be Ironman, right?

The day started off somewhat overcast (we had pouring rain during the night) but eventually the sun came out in full force.  The heat presented a challange to many athletes, myself included.  I didn't finish before sundown as I had hoped, but finish I did, with a dance and a smile.  :)

I have been blessed to have the opportunity to take on the 140.6 mile challange and raise money for a cause I believe in.

Thanks again,
Laura

Laura's Iroman for Alzheimers

I dedicate this journey to the memory of my mom, Ruth.

This July I will be participating in the Lake Placid Ironman Triathlon; a day that will incude a 2.4 mile swim in beautiful Mirror Lake, 112 miles of cycling through the valleys of the high peaks region of the Adirondacks, finishing with a 26.2 mile run past Olympic venues and along the Ausable River.  Yes, I did say a (1) day, to complete 140.6 miles under my own power!

Many people ask me if I'm crazy for wanting to do this again, let alone once.  It seems so long, so tiring, and for what?  I can't honestly tell you what drives me to push through the day.  It's as much a mental challange as a physical one, and I have chosen to have gratitude and appreciate what my healthy mind and body can do.

If you think my day will be long, consider a day for an individual with Alzheimers.  Not knowing  what day of the week, month or year it is.  How long does a day for that individual feel like?  How about a day for their caregiver?  I've witnessed first hand how long each day must feel as my mom progressed through the disease and my dad, with help from friends and family, cared for her.

In the late fall of 2012, while training for my first Ironman that was to take place in 2013, my family lost our wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to Alzheimer's Disease.  Our journey, like the journey of other families on this path, was heart breaking.  Mom may not have physcially been in my cheering section the day I finished my first Ironman, but she was most definitly with me in spirit.

It is my hope, that we will someday have a world without Alzheimer's Disease.

The Alzheimer's Association has been involved in every major advancement in Alzheimer's and related dementias research since the 1980's and is a leader in the global fight for a world without Alzheimer's.

Please join me on my journey and consider donating to this organization, so they may continue to educate, provide care and support to those and their families afflicted, and provide much needed funding for research.

Thank you for your support!
