As a mom, I saw the craziness of labor from the driver seat, and was lucky enough to have a fairly drama free birth in the grand scheme of things. I've had many friends, however, that would not have survived their childbirth had they lived in many parts of the world, and even many places here in the USA. Grade 5 tears, post-partum hemmorage, and several more "minor" things that are not so minor everywhere.
I was shocked to learn that a woman dies every 2 minutes from childbirth related causes, and that 98% of these are preventable with very simple things! Things most of us take for granted entirely. Things like not having transportation to a skilled midwife or doctor if things aren't going smoothly, with distances of 5k-marathon between them and survival, and only their feet to carry them. Things like clean water and basic sanitary tools to reduce infection risk.
We aren't talking about installing western style hospitals here with all their own craziness around birth...we're talking about small immediate changes that create immediate change...creating networks of local midwives and people with skills to prevent the most preventable of deaths. It's an easy one to get behind, really. Fundraising for Every Mother Counts helps keep more mamas alive to raise their babies, builds networks of skilled women, and removes transportation barriers.
Please consider donating a few bucks for an awesome cause. The video attached will give you a good idea of what they do. I'll be wearing the EMC jersey with pride in Chicago in September. You can always join my team! Thank you!
More Info From Every Mother Counts-
EVERY MOTHER COUNTS IS RUNNING THE MAGNIFICENT MILE WOMEN'S HALF MARATHON AND 5k IN SUPPORT OF MATERNAL HEALTH AROUND THE WORLD.
Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. That's 800 women every day. The good news is that 98% of these deaths can be prevented. We have the tools and the know-how to save these mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, teachers, doctors, caregivers and community leaders—if we make it a priority.
Every Mother Counts is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. We inform, engage, and mobilize new audiences to take actions and raise funds that support maternal health programs around the world.
This year, join us in solidarity to run the Magnificent Mile Women's Half Marathon and continue raising awareness about this global tragedy. We've chosen to participate in the race because often distance is the biggest barrier to a woman and her family getting the care they need. We hope to not only increase awareness for the cause but to also make the vital connection for people that so many pregnant women live far from health services around the world and that distance does make a difference. Simply put, we want to run so that others don't have to...
And now, we're hoping you will lend your support no matter how big or small. Here are some ways you can get involved.
