BENEFITING: Stephan Meloy Memorial Foundation
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: YOUR JOURNEY, YOUR CAUSE
My name is Jordan Betten, and I would like to tell you about my childhood best friend who was more like a "big brother", and role model- Stephan Meloy. To those of us who had the privilege to know Stephan in his short yet powerful 26 years, could attest that he was very special. From the way he made others laugh, his contagious smile, to the wise insights he would thoughtfully share with all his friends; he had an ability to inspire those around him to say the least.
Everyone was in complete shock when they heard the grim news that he had been diagnosed with leukemia. Despite the eminent worries that were around him, not at one point did Stephan loose his optimism and his smile. Despite his cancer eventually getting the best of him, the impact he left behind has allowed his tenacious spirit to live on forever.
I wanted to find a way to inspire others like Stephan did for me. I created a "bucket list" which has led me around the world to 30 countries over the past few years, carrying along one of his Fight Against Leukemia t-shirts to have him by my side for the journey! He's been with with me on the most adventurous mountain climbs throughout the Tibetan Himalayas, Running With The Bulls in Pamplona Spain, to volunteering as a teacher in Ethiopia, and to peace activist missions between Israel/Palestine.
In his loving his spirit, the Stephan Meloy Memorial Fund was created at his alma mater, University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), awarding scholarship funds to outstanding young men striving for excellence in every endeavor. The emphasis on the individual, and the desire for personal perfection of mind and body is something that Sigma Phi Epsilon strives for in the community, and something that Stephan embodied in all aspects of his life.
I will be competing in maybe my most difficult challenge to date, an Iron Man 70.3 Triathlon Race on October 4th, 2015 in Henderson, Nevada. Through The IRONMAN® Foundation's "Your Journey, Your Cause" program, athletes have the opportunity to identify a non-profit beneficiary as part of their journey to become an IRONMAN and race for a cause.
I've decided to take on this big challenge not just in Stephan's honor, but to also help raise donations to fund the non-profit, Stephan Meloy Memorial Fund. The scholarship funds recognize, reward and inspire these students to lead exceptional lives morally, socially, and physically to create a "Balanced Man." The receipients of the scholarship funds have usually overcome some challenging adversities, or financial set backs, and the funds are awarded to these students to help them overcome their challenges.
We need your help to PLEASE support the, "Iron Man For A Balanced Man".
Any donation you can possibly make, will go directly 100% to the students, who are very grateful, and the future leaders of tomorrow. The Scholarship Fund also allows others to be inspired by the life of Stephan Meloy, and how meaningful one persons life could impact others. Thank you for your support, and carrying Stephan's passion for life, in your own life!
