THE STORY:

The short of it:

Chicago Women's Health Center provides accessible (sliding scale!) healthcare for women and trans people, and I am running this year's Chicago Marathon in support of their mission. Please join me in this mission by making a donation on this fundraising page. Thank you!

The long of it:

THE RUNNING STORY...

While I was a college student in Michigan (EMU!), I decided to run a marathon and chose Chicago as my destination. I took it very seriously- I went to bars and ordered tonic water with lime to trick friends and avoid annoying questions, shopped from the Runner's World "Runner's Grocery Shopping List" (black beans and red wine!), used Map My Run to plan my long weekend runs that I'd do alone with my fuel belt and gu, joined a charity team local to Chicago, and took the mega bus to the big city to join the team for a couple of their parties and a final 20-mile run.

But alas! My 2007 marathon time was considered "unofficial" because it was about 100 degrees outside that day, they ran out of water, and were shouting from helicopters that we needed to stop running. It upset me that I put all this hard work into something that "didn't count," so I had to do another marathon that counted. Then there was something I didn't love about that marathon, so I had to do another. This year, I'm 30 years old and running my 10th marathon :) I've come to the conclusion that I'll never be a fast runner; it's all about the experience of mind-over-matter, having a solid goal to help maintain health, bonding with my crazy running partners, and raising funds for charity.

Plus, short shorts just feel so nice.

THE CHARITY...

The short of this section is that when I first moved to Chicago, I was without health insurance, so even the possiblity of getting a cold scared me. Eventually a very kind doctor told me about a place she volunteers every week called Chicago Women's Health Center, which offers sliding-scale healthcare. I looked at their website and was beyond impressed! I ended up with health insurance before I needed it, but CHWC has always been a safety net for which I am very grateful.

I'll let their mission statement do the talking:

Chicago Women’s Health Center facilitates the empowerment of women and trans* people by providing access to health care and health education in a respectful environment where people pay what they can afford.

CWHC provides care and services that people in Chicago need, but often cannot find anywhere else. Since we opened our doors in 1975, CWHC’s programs have been shaped by our clients’ needs for accessible, high quality health care. We provide services to more than 6,000 clients through our programs annually.

And their approach:

We treat clients as unique individuals, helping them enhance their knowledge and understanding about their own health care needs. This encourages clients to be self-advocates and active participants in their own health care. Clients consistently express their appreciation for our collaborative approach that respects each individual’s needs and allows time for clients to ask questions, describe concerns, and become involved in treatment decisions.

My goal is to raise $3,000 for this incredible organization. Please join me in supporting healthcare deserved by all!
